The conversion of Zwickau vehicles plans to become Europe’s largest electric mobility production unit as planned. More than 200 pre-production ID.3 vehicles have already been successfully manufactured.
The first ID.3 production vehicle will leave the assembly line in the fall of 2019. Only electric cars will be built in Zwickau by the end of 2020, up to 1,500 per day for Volkswagen and other brands.
The largest and most efficient electric car factory in Europe is being installed in Zwickau. This is the first complete transformation in the world of a large car factory. In the future, the facilities will only manufacture electric vehicles based on the Modular Electric Drive (MEB) toolkit and will have a production capacity of 330,000 cars per year.
CEO of the Volkswagen Group, Dr. Herbert Diess said, “I firmly believe that Germany as a prime automobile destination, should also lead the way in electric mobility. That is why we are transforming Zwickau factory in largest and efficient e-car production site in Europe. Zwickau can shape the transformation and turn out to be a model of our industry.”
Thomas Ulbrich, a board member of the Volkswagen brand said, “The transformation of electric mobility is a vast assignment for Volkswagen. We run the first phase of this project, for example, about half of the new 1500 robots for bodybuilding are already on a run. The paint shop is being expanded and we will start converting the first line into the final assembly as planned this summer.”
Jens Rothe, chair of the Central Committee and vice chair of the Volkswagen Sachsen Supervisory Board, paid tribute to the broad employee awareness campaign on the transition to electric mobility.
“We are working hard to get ready our colleagues for new topics, and about 2800 of the 8000 employees have already trained, and we are making good advancement in this area, he added.”
