Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, engaged in discussions about extended reality (XR) device collaboration with executives from LG Electronics during his visit to South Korea, underscoring Meta's push into artificial intelligence.

The journey to South Korea forms part of Zuckerberg's Asian tour, aimed at fostering partnerships with leading technology firms and establishing strong connections with regional business and governmental figures. Prior to South Korea, Zuckerberg visited Japan and plans to head to India subsequently.

In a significant meeting, Zuckerberg and LG Electronics CEO, William Cho, spent two hours discussing strategic approaches to XR device development. Cho expressed strong interest in Meta's cutting-edge technology, particularly Meta's advancements in large language models and AI integration capabilities.

  • LG is intensifying its strategic partnership with Meta to accelerate its XR projects.
  • XR encompasses augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, and other immersive technologies.

Zuckerberg's agenda also included a meeting with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and a scheduled meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

According to technology analyst Kim Yang Paeng from the Korea Institute of Economics and Technology, Meta's collaboration with Ray-Ban on smart glasses exemplifies its ambition to introduce XR technology to a global audience through partnerships with major consumer electronics manufacturers like LG.

Kim speculated that discussions with Samsung might explore the development of Meta-exclusive chips, aiming to reduce Meta's dependency on dominant AI chip market players like NVIDIA.

Zuckerberg's focus on artificial intelligence is evident in Meta's strategic initiatives, including massive investments in computing infrastructure to support AI development. This aligns with Meta's vision of creating and responsibly open-sourcing general intelligence to benefit the global community.

Experts, including Lee Tae-kyu from the Korea Economic Research Institute, view the collaboration between Meta, Samsung, and LG as mutually beneficial, highlighting the global reach of Meta's products and the technological prowess of the Korean firms.

Zuckerberg's visit to Tokyo included discussions on AI and technology's future with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, showcasing his commitment to AI and technology innovation across Asia.
