Researchers develop algorithm to merge polarization and visible imagesNew image fusion technique reveals hidden features in target identification

Polarization Fusion Images for Enhanced Target Detection

Polarization fusion images have the ability to capture the attention of viewers towards a specific target. While intensity images are in line with human perception, they often fail to distinguish the target from the background. On the other hand, polarization images can effectively differentiate the target and emphasize its outline and texture details, even though they do not match human visual perception. By using image fusion techniques, these two types of images can be combined to reveal multiple dimensions of features. This merging process overcomes the limitations of information obtained from a single image sensor, providing more accurate and reliable information about the target.

Researchers, led by Prof. Ming Zhao from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China, have developed an image fusion algorithm that combines two images with varying dimensions of information into one image. Their concept involves preprocessing the polarization and visible images, breaking them down into high-frequency and low-frequency sub-bands using the nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT), merging the sub-bands based on the fusion rules of the designated preserved edges, and ultimately obtaining the fused image through NSCT inverse transformation.

The researchers envision potential applications for this technique, such as using fused images for surveillance videos in electrical grids, which could help highlight targets in complex environments. The study was recently published in the journal Frontiers of Optoelectronics.
