The Norwegian company Statkraft, one of the largest producers of renewable energy in Europe, is in for plans to build its first floating solar power plant.
The Albanian unit has chosen Ocean Sun, a Norwegian company, to supply it with a floating solar power plant in a reservoir located in the European country. Ocean Sun was founded in 2016 and has expertise in floating solar technology. Albania’s solar park will consist of four units of 0.5 megawatts (MW), Statkraft said on Tuesday. The investment in the project amounts to 2.3 million euros.
“Testing new technologies for floating solar panels fits perfectly with Statkraft’s strategy to amplify renewable energy production from hydropower, sun, and wind,” said Statkraft CEO, Christian Rynning-Tonnesen in a statement. “If the technology proves to be effective and the prospects for cost competitiveness are attained, an extensive application of floating solar energy could occur elsewhere in other Statkraft location,” he added.
In October 2018, a report from the World Bank Group and the Singapore Solar Energy Research Institute reported that global solar power generation capacity increased from 10 MW by the end of 2014 to 1.1 gigawatts (GW) in September 2018 to indicate that capacity may be could reach 400 GW worldwide, although no deadline has been set.
Statkraft said the floating solar power plant will be built in 2019 and 2020, subject to final regulatory approvals. Statkraft, the world leader in hydropower, describes itself as the largest producer of renewable energy in Europe. It is owned by the Norwegian state and employs 3,600 people in 15 nations.
Moreover, another story in sync with energy generation through renewable sources is of scientist presenting the possibilities of setting up a massive solar farm in space that could diminish the concern of energy crisis on the earth.
