Pregnancy can be really stressful since a would-be mother need to intake food for two. A latest study has found out that a pregnant woman’s diet food might be harmful and can lead to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Few researchers from Spain have found a possible connection between traits of omega-3 fatty acid and omega-6 in blood of umbilical cord and its development of ADHD in children during age of 7 or more. Researchers said that fatty acids have significant function in development and operation of central nervous system especially during later pregnancy periods.
They took about 600 children from various regions in Spain for the study. To understand symptoms of ADHD, teachers filled questionnaires during 4 years of children and parents filled the forms after 3 years. Researchers also study several samples of blood plasma of umbilical cord from the participants. When the children were 7 years or so, there was a significant increase in ADHD ratio of both omega-3 and omega-6. Researchers revealed a fact that there should be a proper balance between the two types of fatty acids because each has opposing roles to play. While omega-6 causes swelling, omega-3 acts as an anti-swelling agent. Fish or fish oil is rich in omega-3 while vegetables, seeds, nuts and plant oils are quite rich in omega-6.
According to the study, the ratio that was found had strong link with ADHD symptoms. It was during age 7 and interestingly it had absolutely no link with diagnosis of ADHD. To make it clear, there was just a link found and no clear cause and consequence link. Monica Lopez-Vicente said that their observations are in link with older studies which had developed a link between omega-3 or omega-6 ration in pregnant mothers and early development of ADHD in children.
