Grapefruit juice is already stated as a substance to evade when taking QT-extending medications as it surges the deadliness of several drugs. In a new study, researchers have now verified that the QT-prolonging impacts of grapefruit juice and call for a stronger caution to patients who are consuming QT-extending medications or who have long QT syndrome as of the potential risk. The study was published in Heart Rhythm, which is the official journal of the HRS (Heart Rhythm Society) and the CES (Cardiac Electrophysiology Society).
There are more than 200 drugs that lengthen the QT interval, which is the time it takes for the heart muscle to refresh between beats. The list comprises not only antiarrhythmic medications, but also drugs with no cardiac indications like some antibiotics, antipsychotics, and antihistamines drugs. These medications function mostly by massing a specific “IKr” potassium channel on the cardiac muscle (myocardial) cell membrane, thus extending the repolarization mechanism in the ventricles of the heart. The irregularities in the QT interval could also be induced by genetic conditions like long QT syndrome. Sami Viskin—from Sackler School of Medicine and Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center—said, “With so many medications, of such different composition stopping the IKr channel, it is sensible to presume that food amalgams might also have IKr-channel-blocker aspects, increasing the probability that “proarrhythmic food” exists.”
On a similar note, recently, a study stated that AI (artificial intelligence) can prevent unnecessary tests in patients having stable chest pain. Reportedly, AI could avert redundant diagnostic tests in people with stable chest pain, as per to research. The study was presented at ICNC (International Conference on Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT) 2019. The ICNC is co-organized by the EACVI (European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging) of the ESC (European Society of Cardiology), the ASNC (American Society of Nuclear Cardiology), and the EANM (European Association of Nuclear Medicine).
