Digital Giants Join Forces to Combat AI-Generated Election DisinformationNGO Report Reveals: Generative AI Tools Produce Misleading Political Images

According to a recent report by an NGO, the use of generative AI tools can still result in the creation of misleading images related to political candidates and voting.

The non-profit organization, Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), conducted tests on various AI models, including Midjourney, ChatGPT, DreamStudio, and Image Creator, and found that these tools generated election disinformation in 41 percent of cases.

The report revealed that Midjourney performed the worst, producing false images in 65 percent of cases. ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft, has gained popularity in the past year, leading to a surge in the use of generative AI. This technology has the ability to generate text, images, sounds, and even code from a simple input in everyday language.

While these tools have been met with great enthusiasm, they have also raised concerns about the potential for fraud, especially with the upcoming high-stake elections in many countries. In response, twenty digital giants, including Meta, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, TikTok, and X, have joined forces to pledge their commitment to fighting AI-generated content that aims to mislead voters.

As part of their efforts, they have promised to use advanced technologies, such as invisible watermarks detectable only by machines, to counter the spread of harmful AI content. In addition, an engineer at Microsoft, the main funder of OpenAI, raised concerns about the dangers of AI image generators DALL-E 3 and Copilot Designer in a letter to the company's board of directors, which he shared on LinkedIn.

In the letter, the engineer, Jones, stated that he had expressed his concerns to his supervisors but did not see any significant action taken. He also urged Microsoft not to launch products that could potentially harm communities, children, and democracy.

In response, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company has set up an internal system for employees to report and escalate any concerns about the use of AI. It is crucial for companies to take responsibility and address these concerns to prevent the spread of harmful AI-generated content.
