Solid-State Batteries: The Future of Safe and Efficient Energy StorageUniversity of Saskatchewan Develops Safer Lithium-Ion Batteries Using CLS Technology. Credit: techxplore.com

Lithium-ion batteries are known to contain flammable substances that may pose a safety hazard in certain situations. To address this issue, Dr. Yaser Abu-Lebdeh and his team at the University of Saskatchewan are using the Canadian Light Source (CLS) to develop a safer alternative: solid-state batteries.

Unlike conventional batteries, solid-state batteries use ceramic-based materials instead of flammable liquid electrolytes to transfer charge. According to Dr. Abu-Lebdeh, these oxide-based ceramics are inherently safe, meaning they are non-volatile and non-flammable. Additionally, these batteries have the added advantage of being able to use lithium metal, allowing for greater energy storage in a smaller space.

Although the development of this technology has faced some challenges, Dr. Abu-Lebdeh and his team have made significant progress with the help of their collaborators at the CLS. By utilizing synchrotron light, which is ideal for studying batteries, they were able to identify the root causes of the batteries' early failure: small structural and chemical changes occurring in different parts of the battery.

With this new understanding, Dr. Abu-Lebdeh and his team plan to improve the composition and assembly of these batteries. Their findings have been published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry. Next, they aim to study the batteries in real-time using the CLS to further improve their durability.

Dr. Abu-Lebdeh expresses his gratitude for the collaboration with the CLS, stating that their characterization techniques played a crucial role in completing the work to their desired standards. Thanks to this partnership, the team has made significant strides towards creating a safer and more efficient battery technology.
